The Lotus of Power.
Inspired by ancient Buddhist material culture. This delicate hand amulet represents the Vitarka Mudra, which communicates Buddha’s teaching of the best way of life.
This hand holds a lotus flower between the touching index finger & the thumb. The lotus is a symbol of creation, purity, happiness, wholesome deeds & enlightenment. Buddha was said to be born from a lotus flower & they apparently grew in his footsteps. How beautiful.

Crafted by hand.
I sculpted this lotus hand from soft putty-like jewellers wax, as part of a self-directed MA History project entitled “Seven Hands from History”. From studying buddhist images, sculptures, and the symbolism of this mudra gesture, I began carefully forming the wax into this holding-hand, and made a separate lotus flower to be grasped by the little hand.
I had the wax hand cast into recycled silver, then I worked into the cast metal, and then had the piece moulded in two parts! Each Lotus of Power is slightly different, as I solder the stem onto the bud of the flower, and then into the open hand. Each piece is therefore unique! They’re a lot of work compared to many of my other wearable sculptures, but this piece is a firm favourite.
You can choose from sterling silver (recycled!) or a brass piece which has been dipped in yummy gold.
Care:
Silver will naturally oxidise and darken . To keep it shiny and bright, polish with the polishing cloth included in your order, and read the care card for tips and tricks for how to store, care for, and generally wear your jewel. Gold plate will stay shiny but need some extra TLC so that the gold stays in tact for a long while. You’ll also find care tips for this in your order!
